In 1990, Kim H. Veltman was invited to join the McLuhan Program at the University of Toronto where he founded the Perspective Unit and SUMS.

In 1996, he was invited to move the offices to the Ontario Library Association.

In 1998, he moved to the Netherlands to become founding scientific director of the Maastricht McLuhan Institute.

In 2004, a change in administration and funding led to a closing of the Institute at Maastricht University. Since then, with permission of the McLuhan family, it has continued as VMMI, at Europalaan 73, Maastricht 6226 CN, Netherlands.
