Traditionally, an Animal is classed in the West as a living being as opposed to vegetables or minerals which are considered inanimate. Animal, Mineral and Vegetable were considered the 3 Kingdoms of the Natural World. More recent groups such as the theosophists add the human being as a separate category and thus refer to 4 Kingdoms.
