Great Mother Terms

Great Mother (Magna Mater) was one of the many appelations of Cybele, who, like Demeter further West, and Durga in India was much more than a simple Goddess. She embodied all characteristics of the eternal feminine ranging from a primeval nutritive force (Mama), to the basic qualities of seductive young woman, mature mother and wise old woman that were later personfied as the 3 Goddesses. In India she was also called Maha-Devi, The Great Goddess. Sometimes she was simply called the Goddess. Vega, the Northern Pole Star, is the star of the Great Mother, while Canopus, its dual and counterpart in the Southern Skies, represented the Great Father.
