Ayyappan (etymologically linked with growth in Sanskrit), is a god who is seen a) as a son of the Earth Mother and associated with the sun or b) as a son of Hari and Hara (an early form of Vishnu and Shiva). Ayyappan is associated with a leopard or a tiger and has a forty one day period beginning in December culminating with 14 January. In some versions he is the son of Shiva and Vishnu as Mohini or Vishnu-Maya. This is very likely the origin of the idea of Pan and the Green Man.
