In the West, Cephas is one of the names of Saint Peter, whose name literally means Rock. In the Christian tradition Saint Peter is, therefore, often seen as a symbolic foundation stone upon which Christ built his Church. The association of sacred persons with rocks is found also with Mithra and once again goes back to India. In other traditions Cephas is also linked with a stone and specifically with a cube. In Gematria, a form of numerology, Cephas has a very specific symbolism. It is a cube of 9 x 9 x 9 or 27 x 27. It is noteworthy that the basic square of 9 x 9 is linked with the Vasta Purusha Mandala. In the East, Cephas is a Rakshasha, a powerful being who belongs to the dark side.
