12 Chakras of Melakartha

The 12 chakras of the Melakartha Ragas in South Indian Carnatic music are: 1. Chakra - Indu, means Moon and the name naturally suggests the number One. 2. Chakra - Netra, means Eye and the name suggests the number 2 for the second Chakra. 3. Chakra - Agnii, stands for number 3, suggesting the 3 sacrificial Fires viz: Dakshina, Ahavaniya and Grahapatya. 4. Chakra - Veda, suggests the 4 vedas - Rig, Yajur, Sama & Atharva. 5. Chakra - Bana, stands for number 5 and refers to the Pancha Banas of Manmata. 6. Chakra - Rutu, suggests the 6 seasons of the year according to the Indian Calender viz. Vasanta, Grishma, Varsha, Sara, Hemanta & Sisir. 7. Chakra - Rishi, suggests the Sapta Rishis. Viz. Gauthama, Bharatwaja, Visvamitra, Jamadagni, Vasishta, Kasyapa and Atri. 8. Chakra - Vasu, represents the Ashta Vasus - Apa, Dhruva, Soma, Dhare, Anila, Anala, Pradyusha & Prabhasa. 9. Chakra - Brahma, suggests the Nava Brahmas or the 9 Prajapatis. 10. Chakra - Disi, suggests the 10 Directions i.e., North, South, East, West, the four Corners viz. North-east, South-east, North-West, South-west and above (Akasa) and below (Patala). 11. Chakra - Rudra, stands for 11 because of the concept of Ekadasa Rudras in the sacred literature - Aja, Ekapata, Ahirbudni, Dvasha, Rudra, Hara, Sambhu, tryambaka, Aparajita, Isana and Tribhuvana. 12. Chakra - Aditya, stands for 12 because of the concept of Dvadasa adityas (12 suns), Mitra, ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Bhaga, Pusha, Hiranyagarbha, Marichi, Aditya, Savttra, Arka and Bhaskara.
