Wunderkammer, literally a wonder room, began as cabinets of curiosities. In the view of Von Schlosser these had their origins in the Medieaval collections of the Church. A second theory (Balsiger) claims that they began with prncely collections (e.g. Duc de Berry). A thrid view (Meadow) is that they began with banking families (i.e. the Fuggers) and also entailed a marketing dimension.
