Sabarimala was formerly called Potala and meant bright light. The name Sabari is in honor of the famous old tribal lady from Ramayana - the pure Rama Bhaktha who tasted and tested wild berries for their toxicity and sweetness before offering to Lord Rama and Lord Lakshmana while they trekked down towards Lanka in search of Goddess Sita. Lord Rama was so moved by her devotion that He granted her Moksha. Cited from Website: Sri Lakshmi Temple
