04: World Trees

4. World Trees Uniting these 3 (or 33 or more) worlds, is a world tree. It has many different names. Ygdrassil and Irminsul are two famous Nordic examples. A survey of world trees is given in this lecture. In India, the world tree is the Fig tree (Ficus Religiosus), where it also functions as the Tree of Life, accompanied by two other trees: the Tree of Knowledge (Melia Azedarach, Arbre du Paradis, Arboro dei Rosari) and the Tree of Wisdom (Mango). In India as elesewhere we find sets of 3, 7, 8 12 or 13 Sacred Trees. The world trees thus become the roots of cosmologies and cosmogonies. This lecture discusses Sacred Trees.
