EUC NMC Lecture 27b. Lotus and the Palm The Lotus is a tree and also a symbol of the World Tree. It became associated with the Lotus and with the Lotus Rose. In India, the palm became a column supporting a lotus ceiling representing the heavens. In the West this later inspired the idea of a Celestial Rose. In Egypt, the lotus became linked with lotus columns, and pillars, which led gradually to the Fleur de Lys. In the Christian West, the Palm became a central column of churches and then of chapter houses, inspiring leitmotifs of Gothic architecture.In countires where palms do not usually grow, the palm inspired masterpieces of world architecture.
