a k T p

The 50 or 51 letters of Sanskrit entail a number of divisions: e.g. 2, 3, 4, 7, 8

4 divisions : as a k T p

a k T p corresponds to letters A - K - T - P of the English Alphabet. This transliteration of 4 Divisions is based on the Harvard-Kyoto (HK) convention is as follows:

A = Vowels = Ali or vashinI a A i I u U R RR lR lRR e ai o au M H Aries -Virgo

       Consonants = Kali
K = kavarga - cavarga k kh g gh G c ch j jh J Gutturals Libra - Scorpio
T = Tavarga - tavarga T Th D Dh N t th d dh n Cerebrals Sagittarius - Capricorn
p =  pavarga - yavarga - zavarga p ph b bh m y r l v z S s h Labials Aquarius - Pisces

These divisions are the more striking because they are also linked with the basic elements/causes (tattvas) of the physical world and consciousness:

kavarga - cavarga 5 Elements - 5 Impressions (5 Sensations) Consonants 1-10

Tavarga tavarga 5 Instruments of Action -5 Instruments of Sensing Consonants 11-20

pavarga - yavarga - zavarga Empirical Individual, Limitation of Maya, 5 Verities Consonants 21-36

In one Hindu arrangement these divisions are linked with zodiac signs (rasis) see: Website. In terms of Directions this gives:
East Aries a a i i
South                    North
Cancer                 Sagitttarius
e ai                        t

West Libra K

There were lunar and solar calendars so that this was almost certainly not the only configuration. Even so it is quite possible that this arrangement played a role in the development of Western alphabets. In terms of Phoenician we arrive at

East Aries A (Aleph, Alif, Alpha)

South North Cancer               Sagitttarius
                      E (He, Epsilon) T (Tau, Tav)

West Libra K (Kappa, Kaph)

Julie Wei has linked the Chinese Phoenician alaphabet with the 10 Heavenly and 12 Earthly Signs. In terms of a k T p and directions this leads to

East Aries A (Aleph, Alif, Alpha) chou

South North Cancer Sagitttarius
                       E (He, Epsilon) T (Tau, Tav) hai zi

West Libra K (Kappa, Kaph) gui

In the East Chinese chou is ox and in the West aleph is also ox. Julie Wei claimed that the Phoeinician signs went from the West to the East. But given the existence of Sanskrit prior to Phoenician it is more likely that the influence was East-West: i.e. an Indian Alphabet became linked with Chinese astronomy and travelled westwards. ------------ Note also that 2 of these 4 letters account for names of the months.
